In his daily press briefing on Monday, March 30, Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine declared he was extending his kindergarten through 12th grade school closure order.

Schools will now be closed through Friday, May 1 instead of April 3. The order will be signed by Ohio Department of Health Director Amy Acton and will be reevaluated as May 1 gets closer.

On March 12, DeWine announced an executive order prohibiting mass gatherings in Ohio with more than 100 people and also announced all K-12 schools in Ohio would close for three weeks starting Monday, March 16. In a tweet, the governor called the move “an extended spring break.”

“We want to thank educators and administrators for the extraordinary efforts they will take to continue offering services during this time of national crisis,” said DeWine in a press release about the closures.

The goal of the school break is to stem to spread of COVID-19.

As of the afternoon of March 30, there are 1,933 cases of the novel coronavirus in Ohio with 475 hospitalizations and 39 deaths.
