Contemporary Jazz dance meets “oldie-but-goodie” music classics in the aptly titled Vinyl (as in records, that is), Exhale Dance Tribe’s one-nighter this Saturday in the Aronoff Center’s Jarson-Kaplan Theater. But it’s not just all that jazz: Exhale is stepping beyond their signature style of polished, yet idiosyncratic Contemporary Jazz and into mixing in moves inspired by the ‘50s and ‘60s. “It’s been a fun choreographic challenge,” says Missy Lay Zimmer, Co-Founder and -Artistic Director of the new works. Featuring eight world premiers in a loose narrative set to classic tunes—ranging from The Beatles’ “Something” to Ray Charles’ “What’d I Say?” and more—Vinyl promises to take the audience for a new spin. After all, Zimmer and partner Co-Founder and -Artistic Director Andrew Hubbard are a couple of Broadway vets who know how to excite an audience.
