The Art Academy of Cincinnati is celebrating its approaching 150th birthday with the 31st annual Minumental exhibit, opening this Friday (Nov. 30).
Original pieces created by local artists — who are either faculty, staff, students or alumni of the Art Academy — and sized no larger than 2-inches-by-2-inches will be for sale for one night only, during the 5-8 p.m. opening reception Friday.
The popular Minumental event was created by Professor Emeritus Gary Gaffney in 1987 and featured just 35 entries at a gallery in Eden Park. Today, the event features more than 1,000 works.
“It grew out of a classroom assignment that the students found to be fun,” Gaffney says in a release about the origin. “I had them working very big and very small. And the very small turned out to be very concentrated and intimate. And I think that’s what draws a lot of people to the Minumental. To see how much an artist can cram into two square inches.”
The Minumental art will be on display through Dec. 7.
