Artists and sustainable fashionistas are teaming up for a fashion show featuring vintage and upcycled styles on Cincinnati’s West Side on May 6.
Presented by Fishbone Gallery, the “Rebirth is Inevitable: Spring Upcycled Fashion Celebration” will take place at The JunkYard, an outdoor community wellness center in South Fairmount.
Artists slated to show their work in a group show include Michael Thompson, Rashad Orlando, Jaden Leman, Tempest, Latrell Woods, Kennede Oninku, Sara Kollig, and Sadfish.
Fashion designers who will introduce their designs in the show include Very Rare 2 Find, Saratta, Sadfish, Slink, Demolition Denim, Fig.Finch and Boy.
Show organizer and featured artist Sara Kollig told CityBeat this show will mark a new venture for one local musician.
“A notable designer is Turich Benjy (label name “Boy”) who is a well known Cincinnati rapper making his first foray into fashion design,” Kollig said. “This event highlights the creativity and rich community of upcycling and fashion design that exists here in Cincinnati.” A $15 cover allows guests admission and a chance to shop the show’s collection, but there’s much more in the event description to draw in local creatives.
Pata Roja Tacos is listed as a vendor, along with Stingin’ Bee Tattoos. If fashion, tacos and tats aren’t enough, Hypercakepop will have a sewing station pop-up, and there will be a “glasswork chill zone” presented by Swampglass. DJs Pook and Kei$ha will fuel the dance floor from 8 p.m. – “late.”
The JunkYard told CityBeat that organizers are excited to host the event as the venue’s season opener.
“We do produce our own events here at the JunkYard as well, but this season we are specifically focused on partnering with community organizations, artist, musicians, and others to provide a beautiful community centered venue,” said a representative from JunkYard.
The doors open at 6 p.m. and the show starts at 6:45 p.m. The JunkYard is located at 1683 Knox Street in South Fairmont.
