Cincinnati Design Week (Sept. 17-21) is near — and they’ve pulled a big name for this year’s five-day conference.
Jennifer Kinon, the week’s keynote speaker, is famed for acting as design director for Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign. She also co-founded The Original Champions of Design with Bobby C. Martin, Jr. Chances are, you’ve seen their work: they’ve developed brand identity for the Girl Scouts, New York Times, MTV, the NBA and beyond.
Organized by Cincinnati’s chapter of AIGA (American Institute of Graphic Arts), you can catch Kinon speaking on the role brand identity systems play around the world on Friday, Sept. 21 from 5-8 p.m. Tickets for the speech range between $10-$35 (depending on if you’re student, member or nonmember).
But the conference itself — a “weeklong celebration of creativity” now in its seventh year — will commence Sept. 17, with workshops and sessions starting at 8 a.m. (yes, there will be coffee and breakfast) and running late into the afternoon. In total, 16 events take place throughout the conference’s week. And, according to Kathryn Sturm, co-president of AIGA Cincinnati, it’s one of the largest local design events of fall.
“I am extremely excited for this year’s Cincinnati Design Week because it truly is an opportunity to get to know the Cincinnati creative community better,” Sturm says via email. “You don’t have to be an AIGA Cincinnati member, nor a graphic designer to take part in this amazing week, and we take pride in the fact that it is an extremely approachable and affordable experience. This week pulls together so many facets of design in a city that is truly thriving on creativity right now.”
Expect lunch and learns, a multitude of workshops and lectures ranging from topics like why the letterpress has survived in the digital age to a destressing, creative kindling sesh that employs the magic of Tai Chi. Each session varies in price (some are free to members) and locations are scattered. You can find more info here.
