It’s not hard to find good theater this weekend in Cincinnati. In fact, the challenge is deciding which of several excellent productions you should choose to see.—-
Know Theatre’s staging of the great drama Angels in America: Part 1, Millennium Approaches is definitely worth seeing (read my review here), and this weekend would be a good time to catch it so you’re ready for Part II: Perestroika which kicks off on Friday, April 23, with the same cast. It’s a piece of epic theater about politics, identity and relationships that’s not to be missed, and Know is giving it a great production with one of the best local casts you’re likely to see onstage. Another great choice is The History of Invulnerability at the Cincinnati Playhouse, which I wrote about for this week’s CityBeat. This might be the best production of the Playhouse’s 50th anniversary season, a show about the origins of Superman, the man who dreamed him up and the rocky life he lived. I’ve seldom heard such a fast buzz about a show as this one, onstage in the Shelterhouse Theatre through May 2 — it’s not to be missed. Tickets: 513-421-3888.
And if you want to take a kid to the theater, you have choices. Mary Poppins (read a review here) continues at the Aronoff Center with lots of eye-popping special effects and high-energy choreography. (Tickets: 800-982-2787.) If you want something simpler (and considerably less expensive), check out Tom Sawyer: A River Adventure, Mark Twain’s classic novel adapted as a musical. It’s at the Taft in several performances this weekend (check here for a preview). (Tickets: 877-598-8703.)
