The holiday season is upon us, which essentially means an entire month of decorating, movie-watching, shopping and, of course, a significant amount of baking.

Which also means, a significant amount of recipe-Googling.

And even though things might look a little different this year, a sweet tooth for festive treats is one thing that COVID cannot take from us.

Depending on personal or family preference, or your area, your go-to dessert may vary — some prefer the age-old fruitcake, others opt for the gingerbread man, or perhaps a Yule Log cake or sugar cookies. But if you’ve ever wondered what your state’s most popular Christmas treat is, career search website Zippia (a business that really has no business concerning itself with this kind of information) has done a little research for you.

The website analyzed Google searches in December 2019 in order to decipher what states favored which treats.

Ohio’s top-searched dessert was cheesecake — a favorite dish across the United States, shared by New York, Florida, Nevada, Oklahoma and several others.

Additionally gingerbread, fudge and peppermint bark are some of the most popular desserts.

We were surprised to find that classic holiday dish fruitcake was only a top contender for North and South Carolina, and Christmas cookies were the favorite in only 10 states, including Vermont, California and South Dakota. It is important to note that Missouri was the only state to Google “vegan Christmas cookie” as their majority search.

Other oddball findings include Washington’s favorite: Skittles; and Utah’s favorite: Jolly Ranchers. Another eye-catching dish? Gingerbread cheesecake, a favorite of Pennsylvania.
