Every summer since 1982, Cincinnati Young People’s Theater has presented a musical using eager theater kids from across southwest Ohio and Northern Kentucky. This year’s ambitious undertaking, presented at the Covedale Center for the Performing Arts, is the long-running Broadway hit, Les Misérables.
The story of petty thief Jean Valjean’s lifelong struggle to become an honest man and loving father features more than 80 teens from nearly 40 area schools. The average age of the kids is almost 17; this year’s company was selected from close to 200 who auditioned.
Tim Perrino has directed these annual shows since day one, working with more than 2,000 stagestruck kids over the years, many of whom have gone on to careers as actors, singers, dancers technicians and musicians. Quite of few of the Les Miz performers will head off to colleges across the United States for further training this fall. This annual showcase of young talent is yet another chance to see why Cincinnati is a great theater town.
Les Misérables opens Friday evening and runs through Aug. 1. Tickets are $10-$20.
