A Greater Cincinnati distillery is bringing home the gold (along with some silver and bronze medals too) from a prestigious spirits competition.

Cincinnati Distilling, located on Mill Street in Milford, won seven medals total at the US Open Whiskey and Spirits Championship, which judges whiskeys, rum, gin, cocktails and more from distilleries across the United States and Canada.

Winning a gold medal was Cincinnati Distilling’s signature Stillwrights Spiced Rum, characterized by its rich flavors and smooth finish. Two silver medals went to the Catherine Waldschmidt Bourbon 6 Year Bourbon and the Code 4 Blueberry Donut Whiskey, a collaboration between the distillery and the Butler County FOP Lodge 101.

Four Cincinnati Distilling spirits took home bronze medals:

  • Rye Whiskey
  • Fire Brigade Cinnamon Whiskey, a collaboration with Sycamore Professional Firefighters Local 3907
  • Ohio Malt Whiskey, which was made from beer that would have been thrown away during the pandemic
  • Voltage Peppermint Schnapps, a collaboration with Doscher’s Candies using the same peppermint they use in their famous candy canes.

Cincinnati Distilling placed fourth overall in the championships, with Nearest Green Distillery in Shelbyville, Tennessee taking first place. Over-the-Rhine distillery Knox Joseph tied for fifth with Albuquerque, New Mexico’s Safe House Distilling.

Cincinnati Distilling says these medals bring their total count to 29 over the last few years, making it one of the highest-awarded distilleries in Greater Cincinnati.

“Our team is some of the best and dedicated in the distilling business” Josh Engel, Cincinnati Distilling’s spokesperson, said in a press release. “We are always looking for ways to improve our spirits and think outside the box to create something completely new. We’d love to welcome everyone to come see us in Milford soon to try some of our world-class, award-winning spirits that are made right here in Cincinnati.”

Knox Joseph Distillery overall won three medals — a gold, silver and bronze for its Straight Bourbon, Single Barrel Straight Bourbon and James Scott Blended Whiskey, respectively. Northern Row Brewery and Distillery in Over-the-Rhine also won several medals in the championship: three silver medals for its Five Stories Single Barrel Bottled in Bond Bourbon, Cincinnati Gin and Five Stories Barrel Aged Gin and a bronze for its Five Stories Barrel Aged Rum.
