CPD said an 18-year-old girl, identified by the Hamilton County Coroner's office as Shamari Mingo, was shot at the 200 block of E. 5th Street near Fountain Square. Police were called to the area for reports of gunshots just before 2:30 a.m. on July 5. CPD said officers found two gunshot victims, transporting one to an area hospital. Mingo was pronounced dead at the scene. CPD has not released any information about the second victim as of press time.
While Mingo's age technically puts her in the category of adults who have been shot in Cincinnati this year, her death is a startling reminder of just how often CPD is responding to calls for shootings involving teens and children.
According to CPD, 38 minors have been shot so far in 2023. That number is through June 25, so the total could be higher depending on the age of the second victim in Wednesday's shooting. Still, the number is far higher than the 17 juvenile victims from 2022. CPD previously provided CityBeat a total number of 10 juvenile shooting victims for 2022. The department's spokesperson did not immediately respond to CityBeat's request for clarification on the figure.
"He's been in the fight, we've worked side-by-side for years," Morris said. "When this happens in your community, your city, or to a close friend like he is to me, the cut is a lot deeper. And it motivates you to want to fight a little bit harder."
Morris said Mingo's father has planned a vigil in his daughter's honor at the same location where she was killed, just outside Fountain Square on E. 5th Street, Saturday July 8 at 7 p.m.
CPD said the investigation into Mingo's death is ongoing. Anyone with information related to the case is encouraged to call the Homicide Unit at 513-352-3542.
