Northern Kentucky is becoming progressively smoke-free with the passage of an indoor smoking ban in Bellevue.

During a Feb. 8 Bellevue city council meeting, members voted unanimously to pass an ordinance that bars people from smoking on Bellevue city property, at places of employment and in enclosed public spaces.

"Some businesses and talent considering a move to new areas take local community health seriously. This type of initiative is not only a commitment to wellness, but also a solid investment in the local economy," reads a news release from the city.

Neighboring Dayton, Kentucky passed a similar ban in November, becoming the 33rd city in the state to ban indoor smoking, including in traditionally smoker-friendly bars like Rose Room and Tony’s Ole Saloon.

“I am proud of the council’s commitment to our community health,” said Bellevue Mayor Charlie Cleves. “We are creating a pathway for a healthy, vibrant Bellevue for all citizens.”

The ordinance for Bellevue will go into effect in May of this year.
