Even though his older brother Joe had become a standup comic, Guy Torry had no plans to follow suit when he got out of school. “I didn’t really get into it in college,” he says. “I was the campus clown, but I really didn’t know that standup was a profession until I arrived in Los Angeles.”

Armed with a marketing degree, the younger Torry got a job in the entertainment business with a management company. Then, while watching some of the Def Jam comics, he became interested in performing. “I saw comics I could identify with,” he says.

At first he went by Guy T. so as not to be in his brother’s shadow, but now Torry is a successful headlining comic in his own right. “My comedy’s like a pot of gumbo, mixed with politics and relationships,” he says. “It’s definitely blue; I don’t apologize for that. I talk about the business, myself and getting older.”
