“I was never a class clown,” says comedian Sean Patton. “I was more of a smokin’-weed-with-his-friends-in-the-backyard-while-skipping-school clown. I was pretty shy, believe it or not. I knew I had a sense of humor, I just didn’t think anyone would get me.” It was after seeing Mr. Show on TV that Patton realized maybe his sense of humor wasn’t that offbeat. His reacted instantly. “That’s how I think. That’s the stuff I think is funny. Other people think this is funny?” After dropping out of college he decided to finally try stand-up. “People always ask me, ‘What was your back-up plan?’ I never had one.” He knew he was headed down a tough road, but he soldiered on, eventually establishing his comedy voice. He’s found a sizeable following by really exploring comedy theory. “Seeing the obvious funny joke,” he says, “but going three steps past that, so people say, ‘Hey, where did that come from?’ ” Sometimes that loses folks. “A lot of people take me seriously or get offended.
