Choreographer, designer and photographer Jeanne S. Mam-Luft wears a lot of hats and has a lot of history. Born in a refugee camp and raised as an immigrant, she says, “I grew up questioning class, race, normalcy and cultural customs.” Yet in BLACK BOX, her newest performance work for MamLuft&Co.Dance this weekend, she confronts these perplexities with an abstract, non-narrative movement style. “At the outset, I intended BLACK BOX to be a prototype for ‘black box’ spaces. But it also evolved to become a metaphor — a mysterious container holding all those things we want. A place of infinite possibility.” But she sounds an enigmatic note of caution: “While we were making BLACK BOX, I was also reminded that sometimes we embark on a journey towards what we want but instead find what we need. And I think artistic process is like that — you have to go through it to get to the other side.” 8 p.m. Friday and 2 and 8 p.m. Saturday at the Aronoff Center’s Fifth Third Bank Theater. $20.
