Pigeons Playing Ping Pong

As Cincinnati Reds beat writer (and former CityBeat columnist) C. Trent Rosecrans noted in a brief blog post for The Enquirer about Jake Arrieta blasting our city, his distaste might be connected to the last time Jake pitched against the Reds in Cincinnati. Last summer, the Reds had six hits, scored six runs (not to mention all the stolen bases that night) and chased him out of the game after four innings, so the game must have felt to Jake like watching pigeons playing ping pong. By sheer coincidence, the actual Pigeons Playing Ping Pong (a “high-energy Psychedelic Funk” band from Baltimore, where Jake once played pro ball) are playing Friday just across the river from Great American Ball Park in Covington (we consider it part of Greater Cincinnati, Jake, so no, “Oh, you have to leave town in order to have fun?!”). It’s a later show, so Jake should have no problem making it after the game. Heck, if he’s not pitching, we formally give him permission to leave early and get his beard prepped for the big night out. 10 p.m. Friday. $12; $15 day of show. Madison Theater, 730 Madison Ave., Covington, Ky., madisontheateronline.com
