The Intercommunity Justice and Peace Center needs 200 volunteers to distribute 1,000 yard signs in 20 different Tri-state neighborhoods Sept. 15 and 22. Each volunteer will be encouraged to distribute five signs and get five signatures on a voters' peace pledge during a two-hour campaign. Released All Over Again
Aurore Press had so much success with its book release party in July that it's having another. Aurore Press is the publisher of Country At War: Reflections on the War in Iraq, a book of commentary and art by Greater Cincinnati writers and artists. The party, featuring readings, poetry and music, is at 8 p.m. Sept. 21 at InkTank, 1311 Main St. in Over-the-Rhine. Admission is free. All proceeds from sale of the book will go to the Disabled American Veterans Charitable Service Trust. Copies are available at Sidewinder Coffee & Tea, Shake It Records and InkTank, are $8.
City Council Debate
The Greenwich hosts a debate among candidates for Cincinnati City Council at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 6th. The single topic of discussion will be "Strategies for Cincinnati Neighborhood Revitalization: What has failed in the past, what will work for the future." The format is distinctive in that candidates will be asked to address questions submitted from three separate sources: a press committee comprised of representatives from the Cincinnati Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists, a representative from the Walnut Hills Area Council leadership and the public. Human Rights Program
"Diversity: Engaging Your Global Future Now" is the theme of the Center for American and World Cultures' fall program series that culminates in the annual Human Rights and Social Justice Day Nov. 14. The series at Miami University in Oxford includes "Pieces of Power: Cultural Empowerment Through the Visual Arts," a symposium from 9 a.m.5 p.m. Oct. 26, at the Shriver Center Heritage Room; "Latino Immigrants: Hidden in Ohio" by writer and activist Dan La Botz at 4:30 p.m. Nov. 6 in 212 MacMillan Hall; "Higher Ground: New Hope for Working Families and Their Children" at 4:30 p.m. Nov. 8, in 100 Laws Hall; and Human Rights and Social Justice Day from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Nov. 14 in Shriver Center multipurpose rooms A-C. Stand for Peace
The Women in Black have been steadfast in demonstrating against the war in Iraq since it started in 2003. Participants gather with signs in the traffic island at Vine Street and Central Parkways from 4:30-5:30 p.m. Mondays. All peacemakers are welcome, including men and people not dressed in black.
