These retirees could be in Florida -- or they could be in Ohio.

You wouldn't think that Ohio would be a choice location for seniors in their golden years, but here we are.

In its 2021 rankings released Tuesday, U.S. News & World Report lists six Ohio cities among the top 100 places to retire. For the Greater Cincinnati region, Cincinnati comes in at No. 70 -- a jump from No. 82 in 2020 -- while Dayton lands at No. 62.

Toledo, where Reba McEntire soon will give Ohio its only performance during her upcoming tour, is the highest among Buckeye State cities at No. 53, a significant change from its 2020 ranking of No. 104. That's followed by Youngstown at No. 59, Cleveland at No. 68 and Columbus at No. 85.

Kentucky did not fare nearly as well. The Lexington-Fayette metro is No. 56, while Ashland (which shares a metro with Huntington, West Virginia) is No. 76 and Louisville is No. 104.

Unsurprisingly, the top places to retire in 2021 are in Florida and Pennsylvania, thanks to low tax rates, affordable housing and plentiful healthcare. U.S. News considers Sarasota, Florida, the best destination for seniors overall.

To determine its rankings, U.S. News reviewed the 150 most populous metro areas in the United States on six major categories: housing affordability, happiness, desirability, retiree taxes, job market and healthcare quality. The categories and the weight given to them correlated with a survey that U.S. News had conducted this year with people of or near retirement age.
