John Hillcoat, the Australian director behind The Proposition and The Road, has proven quite adept at dark, violent thrillers stuffed to the gills with gritty and bloody anti-heroes, but with Triple 9 it feels like he’s hit the mother lode. Gathering a stacked deck of criminals and corrupt cops — played by the likes of Aaron Paul, Casey Affleck, Woody Harrelson, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Anthony Mackie, with Teresa Palmer, Gal Gadot and even Kate Winslet riding shotgun — to pull off the heist to end all heists, this time Hillcoat seems to have his sights on a white-hot combination of Heat and The Usual Suspects with Tarantino-esque sensibilities (think True Romance minus Gary Oldman and the overt homages).
