Cincinnati plant shop Fern announced on social media Friday that it will be closing its Walnut Hills location.

Fern opened at its original location in College Hill in May 2014. The second store, located at 737 E. McMillan St., opened during the COVID pandemic and at the height of a plant boom, says owner Megan Strasser.

“Your support over that time allowed us to not only survive but to thrive,” Strasser wrote on Instagram. “However, in the years that followed, our sales have decreased year over year while the cost of goods and overhead have continued to increase. We have been holding off on making this decision for as long as we could but as we approach our 10-year anniversary in business, we are at a point where the only viable option to sustain Fern is to simplify and operate from one location.”

Strasser says Fern’s last day in Walnut Hills will be Sunday, Feb. 18. The College Hill store will continue to stock live plants and a curated selection of hand-crafted planters and goods the store has come to be known for, and services and classes will continue without disruption.

Strasser also says as there is still time left on the lease on E. McMillan Street, after a brief closure, the space will reopen under a separate and new concept. She plans to announce more information about it soon.

“To all the lovely people who have supported us whether, for a week or 10 years, we thank you,” she wrote.
