A grassroots effort to save the historic Sunlite Pool at Coney Island is coming to an Anderson Township restaurant this weekend with Coneys for Coney.

The Save Coney Islanders is a group dedicated to working with the Coney Island property’s new owners, Music and Events Management Inc. (MEMI), a subsidiary of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra (CSO), to save the former amusement park’s landmark pool from demolition. In honor of National Chili Day this week, the group is collaborating with Salem Gardens in Anderson to host this special cheese coney fundraiser to aid in its efforts.

From 11:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 24, $1 from each coney sale will support the Save Coney Islanders’ mission to save Sunlite Pool. Proceeds from the event will go toward promotional materials, like stickers, yard signs, flyers and advertising, needed to raise awareness.

“Salem Gardens was founded in 1926, just one year after the opening of Sunlite Pool! They have an old Coney Island clock on the exterior, as well as old Coney photographs inside. Support a family-owned business, enjoy a local favorite and help save a Cincinnati icon!” organizers said in a press release.

Stickers and yard signs will be available at the event while supplies last.

The Save Coney Islanders are also using proceeds from past fundraising efforts to sponsor a “History In Your Own Backyard” documentary on Coney Island, which is currently in production.
