Apollo 11: First Steps Edition is returning to the big screen at the Cincinnati Museum Center this Sept. 28.

The film, specially designed for giant theater screens, will be shown at the museum's OMNIMAX theater, coinciding with the opening of the touring Smithsonian exhibition Destination Moon: Apollo 11 Mission on Sept. 28.

The film, directed by Todd Douglas Miller, follows the journey of NASA's lunar landing, featuring never-before-scene footage and audio from the monumentally historic mission. Guests will see the first steps in remarkable detail and will watch scenes with Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins, along with thousands of other people working behind the scenes.

Using recently-discovered 70mm footage of the landing plus 11,000 hours of audio recordings, the film offers a front-row seat to the incredible, historic event.

“What makes this movie so much better than any other that celebrates the 50th anniversary is that the producers used only original 50-year-old film and audio without any modern commentary. That alone makes you feel like you are living through the historic event,” says Dave Duszynski, president of Mercury Museum Services, in a press release. “Perhaps the most amazing moment is the Saturn V rocket launch as experienced with the OMNIMAX Theater’s new sound system.”

The film has been a project 50 years in the making, sourcing material from NASA and the National Archives to create it. Apollo 11: First Steps Edition features clips from inside Mission Control, the launch, recovery and post-mission activities as well as audio recordings from 60 people important to the mission.

“The Apollo 11 mission was humanity’s greatest adventure and we’re pleased to be bringing this edition to science centers and museums everywhere,” says director Todd Douglas Miller. “This film was designed to take full advantage of the immersive quality of giant screen theaters.”

The Cincinnati Museum Center will be the fifth and final stop on Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service's national tour of Destination Moon: The Apollo 11 Mission.
