An Over-the-Rhine underground speakeasy is commemorating the end of Prohibition with a musical about one of Cincinnati’s most notorious bootleggers.

Ghost Baby will host a one-night-only cabaret-like performance of George Remus: A New Musical, which focuses on the life of George Remus, who built a bootlegging empire in the Queen City in the 1920s. Apart from his escapades violating the Volstead Act, Remus was also known for flaunting his wealth — throwing lavish parties at his Price Hill mansion and giving away cars to guests; referring to himself in third person and the murder of his wife, Imogene, near the Spring House Gazebo in Eden Park — a crime for which he was acquitted despite having shot her in broad daylight in front of witnesses.

“You can’t make this stuff up,” McDonough said in a press release.

With music and lyrics by Janet Vogt Zeitler and Mark Friedman, and a book by McDonough, George Remus: A New Musical blends murder, mobsters, millionaires and plenty of alcohol, all against the backdrop of Prohibition. The musical was first put on as an outdoor performance by The Carnegie in Covington in 2021.

The musical will feature solos, duets and ensemble numbers performed by local theater artists and accompanied by writer Vogt Zeitler. Audiences can catch two performances on Repeal Day (Tuesday, Dec. 5) at 7 p.m. or 9:15 p.m.
