April 28 is former Cincinnati Reds star Barry Larkin’s birthday, and the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden has decided to pay homage to him through one of their newest additions.

On the former shortstop’s birthday, the zoo announced it has named its 6-week-old African penguin chick Larkin after him.

“There are several Cincinnati Reds fans on the bird team, including me, and I actually lived in the same neighborhood as the Larkins when I was a kid,” Cincinnati Zoo bird team leader Rickey Kinley said in a press release. “Our little chick was two weeks old when the City of Cincinnati renamed a street after Barry Larkin, and that gave me the idea to give the penguin his name too.”

Penguin Larkin was hand-raised by the bird team due to having difficulty eating. The team has since taught him how to eat on his own and says he’s been doing great ever since.

Like the human Larkin, penguin Larkin is a team player, says the zoo. They said he and a kea (a species of large parrot) had separate nests in the same brooder, but Larkin would be found snuggling with the kea whenever keepers came in to feed them.

The zoo says visitors should be able to see Larkin in African Penguin Point starting sometime in May, which is also when the zoo celebrates its annual Zoo Babies.
